How the forum works
Serious choices. One night to compare them. Mildura could be represented by a sitting Nationals MP who may become a Cabinet Minister, an independent seeking influence in a possible hung parliament, or a candidate from a political force challenging the traditional order. On 10 November, 18 days before polling day, the candidates face the questions business and community want answered: live, on stage and on the record. The format was shaped with the candidates, with fairness built into how issues are chosen and how they take part.
Four big questions. No ambushes.
Two state, two regional, drawn from the priorities candidates and attendees nominate. Candidates get all four beforehand, so the answers can be considered, costed and compared. What exactly would you change, what would it cost, and where does the money come from?
One question. One choice.
Each candidate fires one direct question at a rival of their choosing. Unscripted and not shared in advance. Who they pick may be almost as revealing as what they ask.
The audience sets the agenda.
No boardroom deciding what everyone should care about. Candidates and invited attendees nominate their priority issues, and the night is built around what keeps coming through.
Room for depth.
Five candidates, not fifteen talking points. Time to get past the slogans and compare real answers. The format stays flexible depending on participant numbers.
Preferences on the table.
Preferences decided Mildura in 2022. Where candidates send theirs, and why, says a lot about alliances, differences and where they really sit.
Facts checked before the night.
Candidates can submit supporting material to a confidential fact library so key facts and figures can be checked before the night.
